This post is all about simple ways to elevate your home decor with flowers so that you create a more enjoyable place to spend time.
Now that virtually all of corporate America has moved to a work from home or hybrid format, we wanted to share some thoughts on making your at-home space a joyful experience. At ReysUp, we truly believe in the power of a happy soul. Happy souls lead to happy people, and happy people lead to positive work environments, and positive work environments… well lead to business results. To us, it’s all inter-related. In this post, we talk about one of our favorite things in the whole wide world: flowers. Flowers have such a powerful impact on a person’s psyche. Not only are they visually beautiful (which naturally triggers serotonin production), but they also have deep symbolic meaning. To many, flowers represent growth and rebirth, and are oftentimes a nice reminder that every day is a new day. In this article, we are sharing some great ways to elevate your home decor with flowers so you can enjoy your surroundings and be more productive while you work.

6 ways to bring joy to your living space with flowers
1. Arrange Fresh Cut Flowers in a Vase
- For those of us that live in big cities, we don’t usually have the luxury of yards. We may have decks, but very rarely is there much space for in-ground flowers. That’s why most of us opt for fresh cut flowers. Now, obviously, these types of flowers have a much shorter lifespan, but they can be thrown in a vase and used to brighten up any room in your home.
- When it comes to fresh cut flowers, we recommend things like roses, lilies, hydrangeas, peonies, orchids, and sunflowers. These types of cut flowers typically last anywhere between 1-2 weeks, and visually are really beautiful. If you are entering the cooler months, fall flowers like Chrysanthemums will actually last closer to a month. Although they look nice, try to avoid Morning Glories and Day lilies. As their names suggest, they only bloom for a short period of time and are usually not worth the hassle.
- Where to buy:
- Trader Joe’s: Shockingly great quality for very low prices!
- Farm Girl Flowers: Beautiful arrangements delivered straight to your home
- Whole Foods: Kill two birds with one stone and grab a bouquet while you’re making your weekly grocery run! The quality is good and they tend to have a decent selection.
2. Display Potpourri in Decorative Vases
- Some people believe that potpourri is only appropriate in the context of your grandma’s living room, but I beg to differ. I deeply love Potpourri. For those that don’t know what this is, it’s basically dried flower petals or plant materials mixed with essential oils that is used to lightly scent and liven up a residential space.
- People who appreciate Potpourri often opt for it over a candle because it’s less of a jarring scent, and also because it is usually placed in a beautiful vessel that can also serve as a decorative piece in any room. Just remember to toss your petals every few weeks to refresh!
- Where to buy:
- Williams Sonoma: No hassle, pre-made potpourri kits that include vibrant colored petals and leaves and smell amazing. Our favorite is this Cassis & Rose one.
- Aedes: A bougier option for sure, but a good one. Located in Manhattan’s West Village, this store offers kits that come in these cute sachets that you can repurpose to hold your jewelry for when you travel!
- Make your own! Just find your nearest craft stores (like Michaels or Joann Fabrics and Crafts), buy some dried flowers, and toss them in a few drops of essential oils like this set from Amazon.
3. Dry Your Own Flowers
- One of our favorite things to do is buy fresh cut flowers and then just let them naturally dry out in the vase! Once dried, the flowers can last as long as you want. The key is just to make sure you don’t move the vase too much, or the precarious petals may fall off. The best flowers to dry naturally are roses or hydrangeas. They tend to keep their color and shape in tact the best. For a super fun look, buy a bunch of flowers, split them amongst vases of contrasting size, color, and pattern, and arrange all the vases next to each other on a big table (like the image below). It creates an artsy, eye-catching area in the room. You can even add a stylish diffuser next to the vases to add a nice scent! One of our favorites is this one from Dr Vranjes.
4. Plant Fresh Herbs
- This is something I only started to do later in life but really wish I started earlier. It is such a game changer, especially for all those home chefs out there. We recommend starting with basil, thyme, oregano, rosemary, and parsley. These are the easiest to grow and tend to be the least temperamental.
- Planting fresh herbs on your patio (or windowsill) not only adds life to a dull space, but it’s also a really fun hobby. You have to make sure you water them at least every other day and place them in a location that gets direct sunlight, but it’s really so fun to watch them bloom. Plus, I promise you your food will taste 100x better than if you were to use store-bought herbs.
- Where to buy:
- Home Depot: Tons of selection and if you live in the city, they offer same-day or next-day delivery for a very nominal price
- Your Local Nursery: Nothing beats a neighborhood nursery. Plus, lots of them tend to have really unique and beautiful planters / pots that you can buy to elevate your overall herb garden look & feel.
5. Opt for Succulents If You Like More GREEN
- For those of you that don’t like color (yes, we know you exist and yes, we still like you), succulents offer a great alternative. They are also super easy to take care of because…well they are cacti and can withstand a lot. Succulents are fun because they come in all different shapes and sizes. They can be used to dress up a shelf in your bedroom or sit on the floor and fill an entire corner of a room. The possibilities are endless.
- Where to buy:
- Home Depot: Similar to herbs, this store offers a wide selection of various succulents. The same-day or next-day delivery also comes in handy if you are buying a large standing one.
- 1800Flowers: When it comes to succulents, you are usually buying a bunch of them together. That’s why we love opting for a delivery service that comes straight to your door. 1800Flowers has been around for a long time, they are super reliable, and have a great selection online.
6. Invest in Floral-Scented Candles
- If flowers (or living things in general) scare you, you can always opt for the safest route: a floral-scented candle! This way, you don’t have to worry about maintenance and just simply enjoy the scent of your favorite bloom.
- Where to buy:
- TJ Maxx: This store has some of the best candles we have ever found. You do have to put in a bit of effort to find the good ones, but when you do, you can usually walk out with a candle 4x the size of a standard one for about 1/2 the cost. Win!
- Jo Malone: This iconic London-based candle maker is known for their luscious and sophisticated scents. Our favorite is the Peony & Blush Suede one, but you really can’t go wrong with any of them.
- NEST: These tend to be more affordable but still very high quality. We like the Wild Mint & Eucalyptus one for the bathroom.
